Virginia's tennis team returned
to winning Saturday after a loss and
a tie last week as they crushed N.C.
State 8-1 at Lady Astor Courts.

Jeff Podesta started off the
romp by breezing past Herb
McKimm of N.C. State as he lost
only one game on his way to a 6-0,
6-1 victory. Doug Waterman had to
fight a little harder in the second
singles, topping Jeff Griffith 6-2,
7-5 after a comeback from 5-2 in
the final set.

Bob Kain and Rick Swift had
little trouble in winning in the
numbers three and four slots. Kain
dumped Coleman Long 6-4, 6-0,
while Swift romped Ben Page 6-2,
6-1.

Jim Ratliff and Herb Beskin,
holding down the final two singles
spots, each had to go to three sets
before coming away with victories.

Ratliff looked in trouble after
dropping the first set 6-1 to State's
David Johnson, but he roared back
to take the next two sets easily,
finally winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Beskin took the first set 6-2, but
dropped the second 7-5. He
regained his form in the deciding
set, and went on to a 6-3 victory
which won the match.

In the doubles, Kain and Podesta
teamed to knock off Griffith and
King in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 in the
first match.

Ratliff and Swift, both first
year-men, combined to stop State's
Page and McKimm 6-3, 6-3.

The Wolfpack then came up
with its only successful effort of
the day as Long and Johnson
topped the number three Cavalier
team of Dick Kaspers and Frank
Spratlin, 6-4, 6-4.

The Cavaliers stretched their
record to 2-2-1 in the conference
with the win.
