Cavalier Shortstop Mike Cubbage Rifles Hot Shot Through Middle In Recent Contest

Five-For-Five Performance Against Richmond, Friday, Moved Him Into Runnerup Spot In Team Batting

Virginia shortstop Mike
Cubbage, the player that all those
pro scouts supposedly can't wait to
get their hands on, has started an
impressive rally as borne out by
statistics released recently by both
the University and the ACC.

Cubbage has boosted his batting
average to a respectable .304 mark,
second best at Virginia and twelfth
place in the conference, and his 2
homeruns and 17 RBI give him the
team lead or a share of it in those
areas. Wahoo catcher Sammy Beale
also has 17 RBI, thus joining
Cubbage and a few others in third
place in the ACC.

Steve Sroba, despite losing 50
points off his average last week,
paces the Cavaliers in hitting.
Scroba's average till a robust .357
places him sixth in the ACC. The
only other Virginian among the
league's top 25 batsmen is Beale,
now hitting .280.

The return to form of Cubbage
must be especially heartening to
Cavalier Coach Jim West. Mike,
beset in the early season by a sore
arm which made him occasionally
unable to play short and an initial
hitting slump, is capable of
excellent fielding and good power
hitting. Both of his two homeruns
have won games for Virginia.

The totals on the other Cavalier
starters have dipped slightly with
the onset of ACC competition.
Third baseman Jon Williams is
fourth on the team with a .268
average, followed by leftfielder
Terry Dan at .259, centerfielder
Robbin Marvin at .254 and
rightfielder Dave Bratt, hitting
.220. Still under .200 but moving
slowly forward is second baseman
Bill Hall, presently batting .169.

Among pitchers, Virginia's Steve
Brindle's 5-0 record ranks him
second in the league behind
N.C.State's fireballing Mike
Caldwell. Cavalier relief ace Mike
Judkin's 3-0 mark puts him right
behind Brindle with Rick Spigone,
now 2-0, in fifth position. Listed
twelfth is Ed Kihm, Virginia's
captain and recent loser to
N.C.State and Caldwell. Kihm's
record is only 2-1 but only one of
the top ten hurlers betters his fine
0.71 ERA.

The University of Maryland is
presently on top in the ACC title
chase with a 3-0 record. Virginia,
now tied for third, is the only other
conference team with less than two
ACC losses.

Next Virginia diamond action
will be this afternoon against W&L
in Lexington. Coach West will
probably save mound stars Kihm
and Brindle for his two weekend
games
