Cavayearling Bob McCurdy Had 40 Points Against Maryland Last Saturday Night

McCurdy's Scoring Spree Was A Lone Bright Spot In The Devastating 124-66 Baby Terp Triumph

Foul trouble and some clutch
shooting by Maryland spelled
defeat for the Cavaliers at College
Park Saturday night as they closed
the regular season by dropping an
89-84 overtime decision before
14,478 screaming Turtles in
Maryland's Cole Field House.

"We should have won it in
regulation," was the explanation of
Coach Bill Gibson after the game.
Barry Parkhill's short jumper with
six seconds left bounded off the
back rim to send the game into
overtime, during which three
Cavaliers fouled out and Maryland
sank 10 of 13 foul shots to run
away from the Cavaliers.

Virginia put six men in double
figures, but Barry Yates scored 28
and Howard White 23 to carry the
Terps to the win before a
season-high crowd of Turtle (and
Lefty) lovers. Scott McCandlish led
the Cavaliers with 18 points and 13
rebounds, but he picked up his fifth
personal with 2:42 left in
regulation (at least two of his fouls
were on questionable calls,
according to Mr. Gibson), leaving
the Cavaliers defense at a definite
disadvantage and Coach Gibson
unable to use his half-court
zone-trap.

Parkhill had 15 points and Tim
Rasia and Bill Gerry 11 each,
before they all fouled out in the
overtime period. Jim Hobgood
came off the bench to score 12, and
Frank DeWitt had 13.

The loss was the tenth of the
season for the Cavaliers, seven of
those coming in conference road
games. Maryland finished the
season with a mediocre 14-11
record and now faces the
unenviable task of a first round
battle with South Carolina in next
weekend's ACC Tournament in
Greensboro.

Maryland jumped off to a 19-10
lead, before Parkhill led the
Cavaliers to a 36-30 halftime lead.
Virginia was quick to lose her lead
in the second half, falling behind
49-46 with some 14 minutes left,
and it was close from that point on.

Yates hit Maryland's first six
points in the overtime to put
Virginia at a slight deficit, and the
officials took over from there, as
Maryland scored only once from
the floor in the last 2:36. Virginia
stayed close in he first half of the
overtime, but faltered as Rash,
Gerry, and Parkhill fouled out in
succession.

After the trip to Cole Field
House, where the atmosphere was
extremely ACC-ish the Cavaliers
now push on to the ACC
Tournament.
