Cavalier Captain Bill Gerry Nets A Layup Against Duke

Big Bill Hopes To Repeat His Fine December Game Tomorrow

Double trouble faces the
Virginia cagers within the next
three days as they tangle with the
Duke Blue Devils tomorrow night
at Durham and than swing over to
Raleigh Monday evening for a go at
the Wolfpack from N.C. State.

Duke promises to be up for the
challenge from the visiting
Cavaliers. In their last meeting
(December 5) the Bill Gibson led
roundballers embarrassed the Devils,
75-70, at U. Hall in a regionally
televised contest. Earlier in the
season Virginia also came out on
top: this time by a slim 75-70
count.

Blue Devils' coach Bucky
Waters relies on his prize 6-10
center Randy Denton to pace the
offense. Currently Denton leads the
conference in rebounding with 13 a
game, while chipping in with 21
points per game.

Complementing Denton is a
horde of talented sophomores.
Richie O'Connor, Jeff Dawson,
Allan Shaw, and Gary Melchionni
all have played instrumental parts
in helping carry the load for Duke.
O'Connor has been a steady man in
the corner, connecting for 13.6
points a game, while Dawson holds
down a guard slot, and guns away
for 12.6 points an outing. Shaw, at
6-9, comes in periodically to spell
Denton or to hold down a corner;
while his playing time is limited, he
hits for seven points a game.
Melchionni, an unimpressive
offensive performer so far, has
proven his worth with tenacious
defensive play when he comes off
the bench to a guard spot.

Duke's other guard is Dick
DeVenzio, a two-year star, who
now sometimes finds himself on the
bench while Melchionni plays. Still
DeVenzio is a dynamic playmaker
and retains a deadly touch from the
outside.

Company for O'Connor at
forward comes from either Rick
Katherman or Larry Saunders.
Katherman, a double-figure threat
last season, now contributes nine
points a contest; while Saunders, a
starter last year has been relegated
to a reserve roll by the talented
sophomore O'Connor.

Monday night finds the
well-traveled Virginia contingent in
Raleigh for a second confrontation
with a hungry band of Wolves from
N.C. State. The last meeting
between these two clubs was a
convincing win for Virginia before a
large Charlottesville crowd.

Pacing the Wolfpack are juniors
Ed Leftwich and Paul Coder,
currently the seventh and eight
leading scorers in the ACC with
16.5 and 15.9 averages. Sophomore
Rich Holdt also has contributed.

Winless on the road in the
conference, the Cavaliers would like
to snap their cold string. Currently
6-4 in the ACC, Virginia needs to
make its move.
