ACC Soph Of Week

Parkhill Gets Third Mention

By Randy Wert
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Cavalier supersoph Barry
Parkhill became the first player
this year to be named the ACC
sophomore of the Week three
times yesterday when the
Atlantic Coast Sports writers
Association announced him the
winner of this week's award.

Elected by virtue of his
back to back 21 point nights
last week against Maryland and
Wake Forest, the 6-3 Parkhill, a
native of now well-known State
College, Pa., joins Duke's Randy
Denton, who was listed as Player of
the Week. After sparking the
offense in the Maryland contest,
driving and assisting the Terps
dizzy, Parkhill authored a 19 point
second half in the 95-71 loss to
Wake Forest. His 42 points for the
week placed in 12th in the
conference and moved him past
senior Bill Gerry for second highest
scorer on the Cavalier team with a
15.1 average. Parkhill's name also
appears in the sixth slot among the
league's free throw sharpshooters,
having connected on 91 of 113 tries
from the charity stripe for a
percentage of .805.

Speaking about his
smooth-as-silk soph sensation,
Virginia court mentor Bill Gibson
said, "Barry has clearly
demonstrated that he's one of the
top three guards in the ACC
beyond any question of a doubt."
The Hoot added, "He is one of the
major reasons we are sitting in
second place in the ACC race." Parkhill has just four ACC contests
left in which to pad his scoring pace.
