Driesell To Appear

Cagers Welcome Terps

By Bill Nachman

No Virginia, Maryland's Lefty
Driesell has not changed the
Marquis of Queensberry pugilistic
rules. What he has done is to make
his Terrapins a formidable foe for
our Cavaliers tonight at eight.

Brawls have cropped up in early
season action (notably with South
Carolina), but lately Driesell has
restricted himself to coaching a
strong contender, currently
bopping along at a 12-5 clip.

Sophomores Howard White and
Jim O'Brien, both guards, lead the
invading charges from College Park.
White, though hampered
throughout his playing career with
gimpy legs, is hitting the hoop for 17
points per contest. O'Brien,
probably the tallest guard in the
ACC at 6-7, is a good shot from the
field and is in the number one slot
(18.8) in the present Terp tallies.

Captaining the Marylanders is
6-7 forward Barry Yates. Yates,
who at 28 is the oldest player in the
conference, averages 11 points a
game, while also going to the boards
well. Giving Yates a helping hand is
Sparky Still in the other corner.
The 6-7 junior leads the club in
rebounding, as he has hauled down
better than ten a game. In the
scoring column you can find him at
a respectable 10.6 points per
outing. The middle is filled by two
nondescript characters. Charlie
Blank is one of them. However, he
was so lethargic that Coach Driesell
promoted Darrell Brown, who is
also at best mediocre.

Top Reserves

Steve Kebeck comes off the
bench as a top reserve. At 6-1, he
comes in periodically to replace one
of the guards, usually Howard
White. Before attending Maryland,
Kebeck went-to a junior college, a
favorite means to pick up top talent
these days. Bob Bodell is the first
sub to come in to give one of the
forward wall a breather. A 6-4
sophomore from Kentucky; Bodell
averaged over 15 points a game as a
freshman.

Small Wahoos

Virginia will definitely come
into the game with a height
disadvantage. Apparently the key
to the outcome will be how well
the Cavaliers can control the tempo
of the contest. Also, the
rebounding department should be a
deciding factor.
