Frank DeWitt Floats Over A Frustrated Wolfpack For 2 Of His 11 Points

The Cavalier Junior Added To R In The Best Showing Of The Season

The Cavaliers used a tight zone
defense and an explosive second
half offense to take their most
impressive ACC win of the season
Saturday in University Hall, as they
romped to a 79-53 victory over
defending ACC champion N.C.
State.

A crowd of 7,200 and a regional
television audience watched the
Cavaliers regain second place in the
conference and assure themselves of
their first winning season since
1954. They are now 13-4 overall.

Semi-Stall

The sagging Virginia defense and
N.C. State's semi-stall to try to pull
the Cavaliers out resulted in a low
scoring first half. The Wolfpack
went cold for ten minutes in the
first half, a trick reserved in former
years for the Cavaliers, and watched
a 13-10 lead with 13:18 left fade to
a 20-13 deficit before Paul Coder's
basket with 3:18 left broke the
cold spell.

Both teams shot poorly in the
first half, as each made only eight
field goals, but the Cavaliers
outscored the Wolfpack at the foul
line 10-3 to take a 26-19 lead to the
locker room.

Barry Parkhill, Tim Rash, and
Frank DeWitt led the offensive
surge for the Cavaliers in the second
half. Parkhill, held to three points
and one assist in the first half,
exploded for 18 points and four
assists to lead the way. Rash had 13
points and five assists in the last
period and DeWitt had 11 points.
Rash and DeWitt each totalled 15
points for the contest.

The Cavaliers hit 58.1 per cent
of their shots from the floor in the
second half to put the game out of
reach, as the Wolfpack hit on only
35 percent.

Striking Distance

The Wolfpack stayed within
striking distance for the first half of
the final period, until the Cavaliers
ran off 11 straight points, five of
them by Parkhill, to stretch a 49-40
margin to a commanding 60-40 lead
with 4:37 left.

The Cavaliers won going away to
take a 26 point victory, the second
largest margin in their ACC history.

Outside Shots

The key to the contest was the
tough Cavalier zone which kept the
Wolfpack from getting the ball to
their big men, 6-9 Paul Coder
and6-5 Ed Leftwhich and forcing
them to shoot from the outside.
The Wolfpack got off ten more
shots from the floor than the
Cavaliers, but connected on four
less.

Virginia out rebounded N.C.
State 44-39, with Bill Gerry leading
the way with 13. DeWitt had 10,
and Scott McCandlish had nine to
back up Gerry. Coder was limited
to four rebounds for the Wolfpack.

The win upped the Cavaliers
record to 5-3 in the conference.
They now turn their attention to
Wednesday's University Hall
contest with Maryland.
