Parkhill Paces Win Over W&L

By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The best basketball game in
University Hall last night was the
halftime contest between the Owis
and the Bucks of the Charlottesville
PeeWee League. In other basketball
action the Cavaliers waltzed past
the visiting Washington & Lee
Generals, 92-70.

The Owis, on a fine effort in the
last two minutes of their scheduled
twelve-minute affair, rallied to gain
a tie with the Bucks, 8 to 8.

Coach Bill Gibson kept all his
players in town, as everyone on the
varsity played at least eight minutes
against the squad from Lexington.

Barry Parkhill and Jim
Hobgood, both second-year men,
topped the Virginia scoring barrage
with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Scott McCandlish (10), Chip Miller
(13), and Tim Rash (10) also hit in
double figures for the Cavaliers.

Breaking away after the game
had elapsed only a few minutes, the
homestanding Wahoos hit a fine 49
percent from the floor in the first
period.

Washington & Lee never lost its
composure, however, and
continued to play a determined
brand of run and shoot when they
fell behind. High man for the
Generals was forward Mel Daniel,
who hit from all sides for game-high
honors with 20 points. No other
member of the W&L team could
break into double figures in scoring.

Gerry Injured

Bill Gerry, captain of the
Cavaliers, was injured late in the
first half. He sat out the second
period and at press time the extent
of his injury was not known.

Jim Hobgood turned in a strong
performance on the wing. Hitting
for nine points in the first half.
Hobgood poured in another seven
after intermission for a 16-point
showing for his night's effort. He
was particularly accurate on moving
to the inside.

Chip Miller came off the bench
to turn in another fine reserve role.
Defensing his men well, Chip also
found the range of five of eleven
attempts from the floor and three
for four from the foul line (13).

Televised Contest

Saturday afternoon North
Carolina State will travel to
Charlottesville for a televised
contest in University Hall. Virginia,
after two straight conference losses
(Clemson and South Carolina) over
semester break, counts this as a
"must" game.

Virginia upped its season's
ledger to 12-4 with last night's
victory over the hapless Generals,
their best record since 1955.
