Sweet Revenge

Mermen Win Tri Meet

By Jim Wilson
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Revenge was sweet for the
Cavalier mermen last Saturday as
they crushed William and Mary and
Old Dominion 72-40 and 88-24
respectively. Virginia totally
dominated the meet as the team set
eight pool and two school records
in the new Monarch pool.

Old Dominion's major
contribution to the meet was in
providing the facility to have the
meet in for she took only three
second places against Virginia and
no higher than a third in the
tri-meet as a whole. William and
Mary's team offered more
competition than the Monarchs but
not nearly enough to challenge the
Cavaliers.

The Virginia team got off to a
good start against William and Mary
by winning the first three events in
pool record times. None of the
races were very close. The medley
relay won by nine seconds, Mark
Bernardino, in a new school record,
won by 25 seconds in the 1000,
and Joel Curtis won by two and
one half in the 200 free.

After getting second and third in
the 50, the Cavaliers won another
string of three in a row. Gary
Chewning edged out his opponent
in the I.M. and Steve ReMine won.

In the remaining six events, the
Virginia team set three more pool
records and one more school
record. Jerry Rollins and Don
Farmer swept the backstroke as
Rollins set a new pool record. Mark
Bernardino kept up his winning and
record setting ways as he won the
500 in record time.

After the Indians best swimmer,
Ackerman, won the breaststroke,
the Cavalier divers swept the
optionals with Foster Smith setting
a new school and the last pool
record by hitting four out of the
five dives for over 20 points.

William and Mary's win in the
last relay could not reduce the
soundness of Virginia's team
victory.
