Atlantic Coast Conference Notes

South Carolina coach Frank
McGuire asserts that Duke "doesn't
lose a thing" when Blue Devil
center Randy Denton leaves the
floor.

Duke, however, might want to
argue.

Denton committed his fifth foul
and was forced out of the game
Saturday night with 10:45
remaining and South Carolina in
the load-65-60. In the next six
minutes the Gamecocks outscored
the Blue Devils 23-8 and ended up
with a 98-78 victory.

"Doesn't Lose A Thing"

After the game McGuire said,
"Duke doesn't lose a thing with
Denton out. Their big men are as
good as any I've seen."

The Gamecock coach credited
the defensive work of 6-8 John
Ribock for holding the high scoring
Denton to eight points. The 6-10
pivotman has been averaging 30.

Maryland Wins

In one other Atlantic Coast
Conference matchup over the
weekend, Maryland squeaked by
Wake Forest 72-71. In
non conference games Virginia won
the Mountaineer Classic by,
dumping host West Virginia 94-91
in overtime. North Carolina State
came from behind to defeat
Virginia Tech in overtime 94-87
and North Carolina trimmed
Creighton 106-86.

It was the second straight
one-point defeat for Wake Forest
who fell to Tennessee 70-69 earlier
last week. Jim O'Brien led the
Maryland Terps with 22 points and
Howard White had 20, including a
free-throw with eight seconds left
to win the game.

N.C. State-Tech Tie

North Carolina State gained a tie
at the end of regulation play on a
free=throw when Virginia Tech was
charged with a technical foul. In
the overtime period it was primarily
a case of state regulars against Tech
subs because six Tech players
fouled out.

Wuycik Stars In UNC Win

Dennis Wuycik scored a career
high 39 points and Bill Chamberlain
added 25 as North Carolina had a
comparatively easy time with
previously unbeaten Creighton. The
Tar Heels led all the way and
stretched their season mark to 3-0.
