Flying Eagles Unbeaten

Cavaliers Take On B.C. In Classic

By Davis Marshall
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Tonight Virginia partisans will
be able to see if their '70-'71
basketball edition is for real. The
cagers take on unbeaten Boston
College at 7:00 in the initial Mountaineer
Classic at Morgantown. West
Virginia.

The Eagles are 3-0 thus far,
having defeated Harvard by two
points in the finals of Boston's
Beanpot Tournament Monday
night. Second year coach Chuck
Daly believes his team has recovered
from last year's lethargic 11-13
campaign, a year in which the
Eagles were rebuilding from '69's
23-4 campaign.

Team captain Jim O'Brien, a
brilliant play-making guard, heads
the list of 12 returnees. A 16.5
scorer last winter, O'Brien won the
Harvard game with a last second
jump shot. BC's forte is rebounding.
Inside men Pete Schmidt and
Frank Fitzgerald, both 6-7, team
with 6-5 front courters Vin Costello
and Greg Sees to provide the Eagles
with the best overall rebounding
strength they have had in years.

The winner of tonight's
BC-Virginia confrontation will play
the winner of the 9:00 Army-West
Virginia game at nine on Saturday,
while the losers play at 7:00
Saturday. Army, the national leader
in defense last year with a 52.0
average, bolted to a 22-6 record and
an NIT invitation. Already this year
the undefeated (2-0) Cadets have
attained a national ranking (14th).
Having disposed of cream puffs
VMI and Lehigh, however, the Cadets
are not favored to make it past
the Mountaineers.

West Virginia, a 106-100 loser to
Kentucky Monday night, led the
Wildcats in the second half before
losing their first game. Still the
Mountaineers, 2-1, rate the favorite's
role in their brand new 14,000
seat field house. With three returning
starters plus immediate junior
college help the outlook is as "rosy"
in Morgantown as it has ever
been. All-America candidate Will
Robinson heads the lettermen. His
lightning-like ball-hawking and 20.0
average are supposedly enough to
make any team a championship
contender.

After completely subjugating a
good Navy team, Virginia's Cavaliers
are ready. Six of Virginia's first
seven cagers are hitting better than
50 per cent from the floor. With
Scott McCandlish averaging 11.25
rebounds and 18.5 points (57.4%)
the Cavalier cagers hope to sweep
their way through the tourney to a
national ranking prior to the Big
game this Tuesday in Chapel Hill.

By the way, the folks in Mountaineer
country predict no snow
between C'ville and Morgantown all
weekend, and it's only 204 miles.
