Swimmers Meet W&M, ODU

By Jim Wilson
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Last year William and
Mary's swimming team
humiliated the Cavaliers,
67-37. This year the Virginia
swim team is out for revenge.
The two teams meet this
Saturday in a tri-meet with Old
Dominion in the Monarchs'
new pool.

The meet has been labeled as a
toss-up with the Cavaliers a possible
underdog. The Indians will rely on
a nucleus of four swimmers; Bruni,
a shorter distance freestyler,
Greuver, a distance freestyler,
Ackerman, a breaststroke and I.M.
specialist, and Kelly, a backstroker
who also goes the I.M. These four
swimmers are solid enough, but
William and Mary's only advantage
over the Wahoo team will be the
freestyle sprints.

Outside of this deficient area the
Virginia team is as good as the
Indians, if not better in the
remaining events. The Cavaliers
have a clear advantage in the
distance freestyle (200's and over)
200 yard butterfly, and the dive.
The remaining events leave neither
team with a clear-cut advantage
over each other.

These events will be where the
meet will be won or lost. The most
crucial of these events will be the
50 free, the I.M. and the 200 back.
These events can easily go either
way depending on the conditioning
and desire of the individual
swimmers.

The hapless, hosting Old
Dominion team will have little
effect on the meet's outcome as
they do not have any material to
challenge the visiting rivals. Just
like their new gray-bottomed pool
with gray lane strips, they have
desire, but their execution is not up
to par. Both visiting teams are
hoping to "perfect meet" the
Monarchs.

This meet will be a grudge
match. The Cavaliers want to win
back the state swimming title which
the Indians captured last year. To
accent the importance of the meet
team Captains Don and
John Schrum will make up the
line-ups for the Cavaliers. They and
the team members want to win and
this should be enough to get the
state swimming championship back
to Charlottesville.
