Rowers Wallop VCU
In Weekend Regatta
The Rowing Regatta, Sunday at
Lake Monticello, hosted by the
University of Virginia, featured
only Virginia Commonwealth and
UVA as Georgetown never showed.
The University won both the
Varsity and Junior Varsity heats in
a regatta with VCU. The Virginia
Commonwealth University Crew
won the Freshman Race at Lake
Monticello.
A crowd of about 300
spectators witnessed the race held
at Lake Monticello.
The freshman race, held first,
was hampered by wind conditions
which raised the times
substantially. Later in the
afternoon; however, the wind had
died and the Varsity Crews had the
opportunity to row on near perfect
conditions.
Virginia's varsity jumped off to
a lead from the start and never let
up; By 1000 meters Virginia was
lending by approximately 2½
lengths: University of Virginia's
final margin of victory was 6
lengths of open water.
This race marked the first time
the University of Virginia has used
the new 2000 meter course on Lake
Monticello. This course provides
spectators with an unhampered
view over the final 1000 meters
of the course.
Officiating at Sunday's Regatta
were: Dr. Kay, referee; Mr.
Everngham Blake, starter; and
General Distance, finish judge.
