Hart Tops ACC Statistics
Cavs High Despite Losses

By Jim Wilson

The ACC football season is over
for this year with Leo Hart of Duke
and Don McCauley of North
Carolina dominating the individual
records, and the Peach Bowl bound
Tar Heel team commanding the
team stats. The totals however,
clash with the final team standings
in the ACC, as Wake Forest
amassed extremely poor totals for
their first place finish. At the same
time, Virginia's were almost too
good to explain its dismal 0-6
conference record.

Quarterback Hart was the first
player in ACC history to lead any
department for three consecutive
seasons. Hart led the ACC in total
offense as well as passing, which he
has done for the past three years. A direct result of this passing was that
Hart's primary receiver, Wes
Chesson, led the ACC in pass
receiving.

McCauley, even before his
record-smashing effort against Duke
last week, had laid the conference
rushing and scoring records to rest
for the season. This year McCauley
rushed further than any other
college football player in history,
1,720 yards. Last week he was
selected a first team All-American
by Kodak and the American
Coaches Association. Along with
his impressive rushing total,
McCauley crossed the goal line 21
times to lead the ACC in scoring
with this a, you guessed it, new
record.

Coupled with McCauley's
nation-leading rushing, the Carolina
team led the league in rushing and
total defense. Some how the Tar
Heels did not win the
championship. Somehow the
Cavaliers also did not do much
better than last, as they were
second in the ACC in rushing, pass,
and total defense. At the same time
the Wahoos were third in scoring
defense; the offense was third in
scoring also.
