Face Gridders Saturday

Red Raiders Invade

HAMILTON, N.Y. — When
the Colgate Red Raiders take
on Virginia Saturday in Charlottesville
they will be meeting
a squad that has gotten healthy
on non-conference teams but
has had trouble in Atlantic
Coast Conference play.

The Cavaliers sport a 4-5
record with all of the losses
coming against ACC foes. VPI,
VMI, Army, and William and
Mary have felt the sting of a
balanced offense while Clemson,
Duke, Wake Forest, North
Carolina and North Carolina
State have downed the Cavaliers.

Coach George Blackburn, who is
in his sixth year as head man, has a
pair of outstanding running backs
and an accurate passer that give the
Cavaliers a strong offense. Juniors
Gary Helman and Jim Lacey have
combined for over 1,000 yards on
the ground while sophomore signal
caller Bill Troup sports a .526
completion percentage. Troup, a
6-5, 205 pounder, has hit on 70 of
133 attempts for 979 yards and six
touchdowns.

Helman, a 5-11, 195 pound fullback
has gained 546 yards on 128
carries and scored five times. Lacey,
small at 5-10, 178, is the tailback in
the pro-I and has picked up 510
yards on 111 carries including five
scoring runs.

The Raiders, 5-4, will take a
three game win streak into their
first intersectional battle in 13
years since dropping a decision to
Illinois in 1957. Colgate put on its
most impressive offensive showing
of the year last week demolishing
Bucknell, 44-14.

Coach Neil Wheelwright views
the upcoming game as a real challenge
to the Raiders. "Virginia is a
good football team," Wheelwright
commented. "They play a rugged
schedule and we are going to have
to be at our best."

Colgate will attack the Cavaliers
with the passing of record setting
quarterback Steve Goepel and the
running of fullback Steve Morgan.
Both had tremendous days against
Bucknell with Goepel throwing for
three touchdowns, and Morgan
tying a school record with four
touchdowns scored. So far this year
Goepel has drawn considerable attention
from pro scouts for his
passing, 109 completions in 229
attempts for 1,449 yards and twelve
touchdowns. Morgan has rushed for
393 yards for eight touchdowns
and a 4.6 yard average. The Red
Raiders leading receivers are Otis
Fraser, with 32, and Elmo Saxon,
with 24. Doyle Smith leads the
defensive backfield with six interceptions.
