Booters Back Into ACC Crown

By Ernest Dempsey
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

McKay McKinnon, the
Virginia soccer team thanks
you as well as your teammates
because you gentlemen have
deprived Maryland of the
Atlantic Coast Conference
soccer championship for the
second year in a row.

Scores Hat Trick

Last Monday, the
University of North Carolina
soccer team downed the
Terrapins by a score of 3-2,
and McKay McKinnon pumped
all three Tarheel goals at the
expense of Maryland goalie
John Perrella.

Thus, Virginia becomes
conference champion with a
3-1 record while Maryland,

which lost to UNC in its final
game last year as well,
finishes at 3-2.

Bid Still Possible

The Cavaliers' retention of
the ACC crown could possibly
mean an NCAA tournament
bid, quite an achievement for
the team and its coaches,
Richard Lewis and Ian
Falconer.

At present, the Booters are
practicing for the State
Championship game to be
played on Carr's Hill Field
Saturday morning at 10:00
against one of three possible
teams.

Opponent Uncertain

Virginia will face either
William and Mary, who it tied
2-2 earlier this year, Roanoke,
who it tied in last year's state
final, or Lynchburg, shut out
by the Cavaliers in a pre-season
scrimmage.

According to Messrs. Lewis
and Falconer, the booters
would prefer a return match
with W&M in order to avenge
the aforementioned tie.

Home Game

In any case, the entire
University has an opportunity
to see its ACC champion soccer
team this Saturday, and it
would obviously be well worth
it to include the State
Championship soccer game in
your Openings Weekend
schedule.
