Outstanding Freshmen

ACC Boasts Top Cagers

The well endowed Atlantic
Coast Conference fertilized its
rich basketball dynasty with a
fine shipment of freshman
court talent during the recent
hectic recruiting war.

Four New Cavaliers

Virginia inked four
scholarship players, three of
whom averaged over 25 points
per game in their senior high
school season. Big (6-7+)
Lanny Stahurski of Swissvale,

Pa. has impressive statistics in a
25 point scoring average,
nabbing 23 rebounds per
contest. Even more amazing is
6-6, 188 pound Bob McCurdy
who has scored over 1,000
career points, including thirty a
game in his last season. Hailing
from Deerpark, N.Y., McCurdy
also averaged twenty rebounds
a game.

Eric, Pa. produced Bob McKeag,
a 6-5, 215 performer who managed
405 points and 332 rebounds in his
senior campaign. Described as "an
outstanding athlete," McKeag was a
national Pass, Punt, Kick champ at
the age of nine. Al Drummond of
Waverly, N.Y. is one of the more
outstanding prospects, sporting a
25.2 average in addition to hauling
down 240 rebounds despite his
relatively diminutive 6-2 height.
Drummond hit a phenomenal 59
percent of his floor shots and 84%
of his shots from the foul line.

Maryland Has McMillen

Maryland's Lefty Driesell had
perhaps the most successful
recruiting program in the ACC
landing not only everybody's "next
Alcindor." Tom McMillen (6-11) in
a last minute power play from
North Carolina, but also 6-11
Mark Cartwright, and fellow
All-Americans 6-9 Lon Elmore and
6-4 Japeth Trimble, both from
Alcindor's Power Memorial in New
York. UNC ended up with the
tallest prospect in the nation in 7-4
Tom Burieson from Newland, N.C.
as well as 6-9 Bobby Jones of
Charlotte.

Duke has welcomed 6-8 Chris
Redding from D.C. and Dave
Elmer, a 6-9 Fort Wayne, Indiana
star into the Blue Devil fold. Four
of Duke's scholarship players are
tailer than 6-6. South Carolina has
added New York's Brian Winters to
its All-Empire State lineup and
Wake Forest managed only one
blue chip signing in guard Bob
Dryer of Silver Spring, Maryland.
The Deacons are counting on two
junior college stars to pick up the
slack in the program.

Non-Conference Teams

Outside the ACC, perennial
Southern Conference leader
Davidson has John Falconi of New
York City while Furman is making
a bid to unseat the Wildcats by
signing 6-5 Gary Clark of Illinois in
addition to several junior college
transfers. The Citadel also
concentrated on transfer
performers.

Virginia Commonwealth
University continued its building
program by getting New York
City's Doug McDougal and Dave
Edwards, 6-9 Bernard Harris of
Roanoke, and Richmond's Jess
Dark.
