CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The
Duke-Wake Forest game
scheduled for Durham Nov. 7
could decide the Atlantic Coast
Conference championship.

But neither Duke coach Tom
Harp nor Wake Forest mentor Cal
Stoll admit to anything more than
preparing for their clashes this
weekend against two powerhouses
in the southeast.

"Toughest team"

Duke, 5-2 this season and sitting
atop the Conference with a 4-0
mark, takes on Georgia Tech at
Durham in the Blue Devils'
homecoming game. The Yellow
Jackets, also 5-2 on the season,
"will be the toughest team we have
faced since Ohio State," said Harp.
"They've got good personnel very
ably handled by Bud Carson and his
staff. They've probably got more
experience on their defensive team
which is very, very quick and gang
tackles real well."

Ninth ranked Vols

Wake Forest, sitting in the
number two slot in the ACC, travels
to Memphis, Tenn., for an
encounter with the ninth ranked
Tennessee Vols. Stoll readily admits
being worried about Tennessee and
said his big problem is stopping the
passing of Bobby Scott.

"He threw for 385 yards against
what has to be a decent Florida
team last week," Stoll said. "For
some people that's a whole season
of work."

Droll Stoll

After discussing their upcoming
contests, both coaches agreed to a
little conversation about their big
game.

"We've got a shot at it now,"
said Stoll, admitting, "the winner
of the game's got a great chance of
raking it all." But, he said, "I'd like
to get through the conference
schedule before getting on cloud
nine."

Sharp Harp

"It would appear right now the
game would have a great deal to say
about something," a coy Harp said
of his next ACC match. "But we
are completely concentrating on
Georgia Tech." he said. "Unless we
do, we're going to have a difficult
time staying with them."

Kentucky & Georgia

Two other teams also go outside
the Conference this weekend with
North Carolina State visiting
Kentucky and South Carolina at
Athens for a regionally televised
game with Georgia.

Clemson and Maryland meet at
College Park, Md., and Virginia and
North Carolina clash at Chapel Hill
in the other conference games on
the schedule.

Driver's seat

But, getting back to the big
game the following week, Stoll
admits a Duke victory over his
Deacons would virtually eliminate
his club from the ACC race and
would put Duke in the driver's seat
the rest of the way.

Harp notes he has three tough
conference games left, Wake Forest,
South Carolina, and North
Carolina. "We have to be
mechanically, physically and
mentally at our very best or we
could lose one or all of them," he
said.
