First Cadet Visit Since1964
'Hoos To Face Army

Can Blackie's Boys Do It To The Military For The Second Straight Week
After Blasting VMI Last Weekend, Wahoos Face An Inspired Army Squadron This Saturday
Trying to make it two in a
row, the Virginia varsity football
team tangles with a
balanced attack in the guise of
Army Saturday at Scott Stadium.
Army, which brings a rather
unimpressive 1-4 ledger into
the contest is stronger than its
record reveals. The losses were
at the hands of Nebraska
Tennessee, Notre Dame (in the
top twenty) and Baylor, while
its lone win was a 26-0 demolition
of Holy Cross.
Polished Conditioning
As usual, the Corps comes to
town with a well-disciplined football
team polished with excellent
physical conditioning. Films indicate
that the high scores run up
against them do not show the true
merit of a topflight offense.
Ritacco Shines
Ray Ritacco, at fullback, is the
cog which makes the offense go. As
a top runner, he is especially effective
for short yardage, but has
surprised defenses on several occasions
this season when he sprung
for sizeable gainers via the draw
play.
Kicking Specialist
If the Army offensive stalls,
kicking specialist Arden Jensen can
three-pointers from good
range. Forty yards and a good snap
could very easily give the visitors
some points.
'Work Cut Out'
Coach George Blackburn
commented on Saturday's action
with, "We really should have our
work cut out for us. Good passing
and running should provide an
interesting afternoon."
Defensive coach Don Lawrence
thinks that the Cavaliers will need
'the big play' on Saturday. If our
defensive backfield comes up with
any kind of game comparable to
that with VMI, we'll be in good
shape," he said.
Lacey and Hefman, Virginia's
top runners, both broke out of
lethargy last weekend. A continued
Cavalier ground game, coupled with
pinpoint passes from the shotgun of
Bill Troup might turn the trick
against the Corps.
To further emphasize the importance
of a team effort Coach Blackburn
astutely observed that "It will
take Virginia 60 minutes of football
to beat Army." He further stated
that "We've only been playing in
15 and 30 minute bursts, and that
type of football is certainly not
good enough to win football games,
especially against a team as well
disciplined and conditioned as
Army."
Two treats are in store for Virginia
'faithful' Saturday. First, 2,000
Army Cadets will march in traditional
style into Scott Stadium at
12:20 p.m., approximately one
hour before kickoff.
Third Appearance
Entertainment at the half will be
provided by the 150 member Fall
Church High School Jaguar Marching
Band. Under the direction of
James Langford, it will be the
school's third annual appearance,
having appeared at the game with
Tulane in 1968 and Duke last
season.
Omnipresent Flasks
Football is the name of the
game. Despite such pleasant diversions
as the halftime show and the
omnipresent flask, a packed Scott
Stadium should echo with the
sounds of pigskin Saturday.
