Record Rises To 1-2

Harriers Trounce Wake

By Mike DeCamps
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

A strong showing of depth
matched with a usual home
course advantage enabled the
Cavalier harriers to get on the
winning track last Friday as the
team notched a victory over
Wake-Forest 21-38.

Team Effort

The deacons were able to
take first, but nine of the top
twelve finishers were Cavaliers
on the rugged five mile course
wore the Wake boys down.

Lose Nemesis

Ironically, Wake's John Gulledge,
a boy who was recruited by
Cavalier coach Lou Onesty, and
then at the last minute decided to
attend Wake Forest, finished first.
Gulledge was pressed at first by
Virginia's Phil Meyer, but when
Meyer got stomach pains, Gulledge
moved ahead to stay, finishing
strong in 27:52.

Meyer held on to finish second
though in 28:21 and lead in three
other Virginia thinclads before the
next Wake runner. Jim Wood, Mike
Pace, and Joe Cacciapaglia were the
respective finishers behind Meyer.

Virginia's fifth man was Captain
Frank Andrew, who placed seventh
overall right behind Wake's second
man, John Schrock. The Deacons'
other three scoring runners finished
eighth, thirteenth, and fifteenth.

This victory moved the Cavaliers
record up to 1-2, all having been
conference meets. The harriers will
run only one more conference
team, Duke with their remaining
foes being Big Five schools.
