Troup Selected
Player Of Week

Cavalier Coach George Blackburn
normally awards game balls to
two outstanding seniors after a winning
effort, but after last Saturday's
49-10 massacre of the VMI Keydets
at Scott Stadium, Mr. Blackburn
made an exception to his rule. He
awarded a third ball to sophomore
quarterback Bill Troup, who led the
Wahoos to victory in his first varsity
start, and is the Cavalier Daily's
Player of the Week.

"Any boy who can hit 13 of 14
passes with one dropped ball should
be given recognition," said Coach
Blackburn, who praised Troup for a
"real good, excellent football
game."

Most of the Cavalier worries
going into the game centered
around the inexperienced Troup,
who found himself in the starting
slot as a result of Larry Albert's
shoulder separation, but the 6-5,
210 pounder dispelled all doubts
with his performance, as his 13
completions were good for 154
yards and two TDs, and he ran for
another score. He directed the Cavalier
offense to more than 450
total yards.

Troup's only extensive varsity
experience before facing the
Keydets was against Wake Forest,
when he replaced the injured Albert
for most of the game. He had little
success until he directed a scoring
drive, finishing it with a six-yard
touchdown run, late in the game
against a team of Wake Forest
reserves. He finished the game with
10 completions in 25 tries, but he
also had three passes picked off.

Saturday's performance by
Troup was instrumental in wiping
out a three game Cavalier losing
streak, and gives the Wahoos two
quarterbacks with significant game
experience going into this
weekend's contest with West Point.
