Defense Main VMI Threat
Keydets Offer 'Spirit'
When the Keydets of
Virginia Military Academy bus
into Charlottesville this weekend,
they will bring with them
a record and a sad story similar
to that of the Cavaliers.
After taking Furman at
home, the Big Red when on
the road where they promptly
dropped contests to Rice, West
Virginia, and Boston College.
So, both clubs will bring 1-3
records into this game of rivals
which dates back to 1893. The
Wahoos have won twice as
many games in the series as
have the Keydets, but this
week's contest will be much
more important to both teams
than the intrastate rivalry. A
loss for either team would spell
the doom of the season.
With only one winning season in
the last eight years, the Keydets are
coming off a winless 1969 ordeal,
but despite the fact that there are
no lettermen at the wingback and
running back slots, the ball club
seems to be reasonably deep with
experienced players. A sophomore,
Steve Conlan, has taken the starting
job at split end away from a letterman
and snagged seven aerials
against Boston College.
Tri-captain and two year letterman
Murphy Sprinkle is back after
a junior year which saw him complete
only 33% of his passes but for
a thousand yards. The running
game, which suffered last season,
must improve this season despite a
dearth of experience.
There may be plenty of returnees
on defense, but VMI yielded
444 yards on the ground alone
last weekend at BC.
If the Big Red from Lexington
has nothing else, it should have a
pretty effective kicking game with
both the punter, Jim Bailey (fourth
in the Southern Conference) and
place kicker Don Cupit returning.
Cupit has already tied the school
record for field goals in a season
which he co-holds from last season.
So it's do it or die for two
football teams in Scott Stadium
and we all know what the consequences
will be if the Cavaliers
cannot stifle the aroused soldiers of
the future.
Hang on to your dates Wahoos,
and hang on to your rabbit feet
because there are some hungry Men
coming to town.
Wake Forest Cheerleaders, Who Certainly Had A Lot To Cheer About, Kick Up Some Spirit
Unlike Virginia's Cheerleaders & Varsity, Wake's Crowd Prompters Even Look Good In Defeat
