Experienced Booters Carry High Hopes For Repeat As Champs And National Rank

A potentially strong
Virginia soccer team opens its
1970 season against the VMI
Keydets tomorrow at
Lexington, Va.

The Cavaliers feature a host
of returning lettermen, who are
capable of producing an
exciting, explosive offense
and/or an impenetrable
defense.

Under the direction of
Coaches Richard Lewis and Ian
Faulconer, who, according to
team members, have more than
adequately filled the shoes of
former mentor Gordon Burris, the
1969 ACC Champions hope to
provide a repetition of last season.

The probable starting lineup, according to tri-captain Dave
Bowman, includes the following:

At goalie, Jim Glazer will try to
cover the net area as well as his
predecessor, Danny Abramson.
Glazer, who in practice seems to
"ask" the opposing line for shots to
stop, has the size, arm, and reflexes
of an experienced goaltender.

However, Goalie Glazer may
have trouble getting a large amount
of business this season. Virginia's
fullback line of Ed Marks, Tom
Shuldwachter, and Paul Corbin was
very strong in the team's scrimmage
against Lynchburg College ten days
ago, and drew the praises of both
coaches as well as General Manager
Burris.

The halfbacks, although
formidable in themselves, will miss
captain Bowman, who is out of
action at present with a recurring
leg injury. Nevertheless, Bowman
expressed his full confidence in Jay
Ziehl, Chip Williams, and Tom
Dawes, who will be on the field
when the Cavaliers are in a 4-3-3
formation. Because of the
flexibility of the excellent front
line, Virginia will also use a 5-2-3
formation. However, against VMI,
the coaches will most likely start
with wings Fred McGlynn and first
Andy DuPont, and interior men
John Gaughen and Jay Connor. The
Cavaliers also have Phil Crane, Steve
Kennely, and Sam Crosby, who can
play anywhere on the line and who
will be seen a great deal during the
season.

The offense is also plagued by
the injury of Jack Sherry, whose
hustle will be missed for a while
this fall.

According to Bowman, VMI is
not as skilled a team as, say,
Maryland, UNC, or Virginia for that
matter. However, the Keydets are a
hustling squad in excellent shape
and will be out to avenge last year's
5-0 loss to the Cavaliers.

Both the coaches and players
feel that the three initial contests,
against VMI, William and Mary, and
Hampton-Sydney will be the
"easiest" on the Virginia slate.
However, Messrs. Lewis, Faulconer,
and Andre all hope that last year's
team spirit carries over to the 1970
squad, and as Coach Faulconer said
in practice Monday, the team must
improve within 10 yards of each
goal.
