SC In 3-Way Tie

Davidson And The Citadel Joined
Virginia Military Institute at the
top of the heap over the weekend
in the Southern Conference. The
Citadel And Davidson won their
games while VMI's loss was to a
non-Conference team.

Davidson, in its first game of the
season, beat Richmond 14-5. The
Citadel, scoreless in two previous
games, found the range with a 31-0
win over East Carolina.

In other games VMI lost to West
Virginia 47-10, Furman lost to
Wofford 28-13 And William & Mary
dropped a 17-10 decision to
Cincinnati.

Davidson, which shared the
1969 Conference crown with
Richmond, was paced by
quarterback Mark Thompson, who
passed 21 yards to Mike
Mikolayunas for six points in the
Wildcats' first series of plays.

Halfback Bill Bracken scored
from the one in the third period.
The Wildcats harassed Spider
quarterback Charlie Richards
throughout the game to keep
Richmond off balance. Richards
completed 15 of 37 passes And was
intercepted three times. It was the
Spiders' second straight loss after
opening with a 21-6 upset of North
Carolina State.

Citadel tailback Bob Duncan
scored two first half touchdowns as
the Bulldogs unlimbered against
East Carolina. Duncan cruised for
199 yards for the night while
bidding to keep his conference
rushing crown.

The Bulldogs also scored on a
35-yard spurt by Ben Chavis, a
27-yard field goal by Jim Leber And
a 14-yard run by Jon Hall.

East Carolina penetrated to The
Citadel seven in the second quarter
but the drive died when
quarterback John Cassazza was
dumped on fourth down.

West Virginia's 47-10
humiliation of VMI was the
mountaineers' third straight over a
Southern Conference team.
Running back Bob Gresham scored
three first period touchdowns And
rolled up 99 yards in six shots
before going to the bench. Pete
Wood scored twice while grinding
out 158 yards in 12 carries.

Fullback Jim Braxton scored
once from a yard out And kicked
five of seven conversion attempts.
Halfback Eddie Williams also scored
a touchdown.

The Keydets scored on a
35-yard field goal by Ken Cupit And
a one-yard back by quarterback
Randy Kinsey. The Keydets were
held to 79 yards on the ground And
58 in the air. The Mountaineers
rolled up 545 yards but failed to
bust the 600-yard mark for the first
time this young season.

William And Mary lost its third
straight after blowing a 10-7
halftime edge. Cincinnati
quarterback Albert Johnson dashed
two yards around the left side in
the fourth quarter to crack a 10-10
tie.

A 46-yard Indian drive ran out
of time And gas on the Bearcat two
as the game ended.

Wofford found Furman to its
liking And rolled to its 12th straight
win. Fullback Clifford Boyd scored
three times on runs of one, two And
15 yards. Bobby Jordan scored on a
seven yard dash.

Furman's Steve Crislip barged
over from the five to tie the game
7-7 in the second period. After the
winners put the game out of reach,
Furman quarterback Cleve
Hightower hit flanker Rodney
Acker with a 22-yard scoring pitch.

Next Saturday, The Citadel is at
Arkansas for a night game, East
Carolina is at West Texas State at
night And Richmond is at Southern
Mississippi for a nighter.
