Could Share National Crown

Stickmen To Meet W&L, Hofstra

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.
- Virginia successfully defended
its ACG lacrosse championship
Saturday at home by
overcoming powerful Maryland
9-3. Since Johns Hopkins

upset Navy 9-7 the same day,
Virginia remains in contention
for a share of the national
championship. Wins over
Washington and Lee and Hofstra
in the last two ball games
will be needed to clinch Virginia's
claim to the title.

Virginia parlayed brilliant defense
and superior ball control
tacts to overwhelm Maryland. The
Terp' powerful attack was blanked
by the Cavalier's tough front line
defense of Tom Dawes, Doug
Hilbert and Bruce Manges, as
Virginia ran up a 9-1 lad before
Coach Glenn Thiel attempted his,
bench. Mideastern division point
scoring leader John Kaestner collected
a goal and an assist after
Tom Dawes left the game. Hilbert
shut out Doug Carter, a 1968 first
team All-American. In Hilbert's last
seven games he has had but one
goal scored on him.

Freshman Tom Duquette helped
spark the Cavaliers' offense dumping
in two goals and assisting three
times. His totals give him a second
ranking in the division behind
Kaestner with 19 goals and 19
assists (tops in the division). Middle
Jim Potter contributed three goals
to the Cavaliers' cause as he
continued his outstanding play.

Virginia's midfields consistently
came up with the loose balls,
capturing 59 to Maryland's 34, but
the staggering stat is shots. Virginia
limited Maryland to 22, while
taking 60. Maryland goalie Vaughan
Topping must have felt slightly
shell-shocked making 23 saves,
many of them excellent ones to
thwart Cavalier scoring bids. Virginia
goalie Al Hirsh had only seven
saves, but six were one on one
situations.

The win was the second in a row
over Maryland, and tied the lowest
score for Maryland in the series,
now 6-20 in Maryland's favor. It
also represented the second ACC
title in a row for the Cavaliers and
their fourth title in all.

Coach Thiel was enthusiastic in
his praise of the whole team, which
he felt "played brilliant team
lacrosse. They never let up and
really proved that they wanted the
ACC title again. Hopkins big win
over Navy could help us to share
the title."
