Sun Poll Ranks Stickmen Third

The Baltimore Sun came out
with its first lacrosse poll of the
season yesterday, with Virginia
placing third behind Navy and
Johns Hopkins as the top teams in
the country.

Falling to the Midshipmen 11-7
this past Saturday, Glen Thiel's
Cavaliers stand 4-2 on the season,
taking into consideration an 11-5
loss to Mount Washington Lacrosse
Club in their opening game. They

received thirty seven of a possible
fifty votes.

Only Navy Unbeaten

The Naval Academy remains as
the only undefeated team in the
country after Saturday's games.
Edging Carling Lacrosse Club in
their season debut, the Middles
successively whipped Harvard 9-7,
Mr. Washington 6-4, Princeton 9-3,
and Maryland 6-3 before 14,000
people in College Park two weeks
ago. They were a unanimous
choice, collecting all fifty votes.

Hopkins ranked second after
this weekend's 9-8 upset over
Army. Tied 8-8 with five seconds to
go in the game, the Blue Jays won
it with a goal by Doug Honig to
remain in the running for the
national title. They now stand 6-1
for the year.

Maryland was able to stay in
contention with a win over North
Carolina, 10-8, Monday afternoon,
boosting their record to 5-2. The
Terps, coached by former Virginia
coach Buddy Beardmore, will come
to Charlottesville May 9 to decide
the ACC championship, and this
game could well decide the Cavaliers'
chances for a share in the
national crown as well.

Virginia To Face Terps

After losing to both Hopkins
and the Long Island Lacrosse Club,
Army placed fifth to Maryland's
fourth. Because of scheduling problems
the Cadets and the Cavaliers
will not meet this year. They will,
however, face Maryland this weekend.

Following Army are in descending
order Cornell (5-1), Bowling
Green (5-0), North Carolina (5-2),
Brown (8-2, 3-0 in the vis), and
Princeton (1-5) and Syracuse (4-2)
tied for tenth. Also receiving votes
were Air Force, Yale and Washington
& Lee.

Coming off the loss to the
Middles, the Cavaliers will face
Carling Lacrosse Club Sunday.
Carling, though not quite as good as
Mount Washington, is a pretty well
balanced team and will come into
the game with a 500 record.

Wahoo Alumni

Playing this year for the Brewers
will be two former Virginia
stickmen, Laird Jackson on defense
and Jim Franklin at attack. Also at
attack will be three time
All-American Jim Lewis, a Naval
Academy alumnus.

The Carling Club was able to
upset Virginia last season in the last
game of the year, 13-11, here in
Charlottesville. Coached again by
Arlyn Marshall they won't be as
strong as they were last season. This
past weekend they lost to the
Maryland Lacrosse Club 10-6.
