Match Last Year's Mark
Netters Blank Keydets

Virginia's tennis team ended
its home schedule on a high
note yesterday by blanking
VMI, 9-0. It was the Cavaliers'
third consecutive win and
upped their record to 13-3,
thereby equaling last year's
mark.
John Winter found the going a
little rugged at first singles, but
managed to defeat VMI's Paul
Dickinson 6-3, 4-6, and 6-3, with a
rocket-like service.
At the number two spot, Whipping VMI Keydets 9-0, Virginia's Tennis Team Travels To W&L1
Virginia Captain; Andy Scheinman,
frustrated Keydet Ronnie Lau to
Gorden Burris' Netters Matched Last Year's 14-3 Record Yesterday
shot, while Biff Cooper came from
behind to down VMI's John
Ashman 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 at third
singles.
Rowland Shut Out
At fourth, fifth and sixth
singles, Jeff Podesta, Bob Kain, and
Doug Waterman all trounced their
respective opponents. It took Kain
less than 25 minutes to defeat
Keydet Dwight Rowland 6-0, 6-0.
The doubles competition was a
reiteration of the sharp and poised
Cavalier play as all three matches
were won in less than 55 minutes.
Scheinman and Jones
defeated Dickinson and Lau 6-2,
and 6-1, at first doubles with some
amazing shots and strong
teamwork.
At number two, John Mertz and
Cooper bounced Ashman and
Bobby Brown 6-2, 6-2, and Kain
and Podesta overran Jeremy Tyrell
and Barry O'Donnel by a score of
6-0, 6-2.
Virginia's next match is against
Washington and Lee tomorrow
afternoon at Lexington, Va.
