Drop Second Straight

Netters Beaten

By Davis Marshall
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

"We took a beating," said a
disgusted Coach Gordon Burris
after his tennis team absorbed
their second straight loss 6-3
yesterday afternoon.
Maryland's 7-2 Terps did the
beating as Virginia's ledger
dipped to a respectable 10-3.

The match began badly for
the Cavaliers as they dropped
five of the first six singles sets,
number six player Doug
Waterman being the only
winner. But the Terps could
capitalize on only four of the
advantages as number four Jeff
Podesta stormed back from his
one set deficit to take Neil
Patterson 3-6, 6-2, and 6-2.
Waterman also emerged
triumphant as he downed
Andy Cohen 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

In other singles matches on
the Lady Astor Courts, number
five Bob Kain was defeated by
the Terps' Gary Silverman 6-3,
6-3, and number three Cavalier
Biff Cooper was downed by
Gene Speni 6-3 and 6-4.
Number two Andy Scheinman,
Virginia captain, was defeated
by Ray Buch-Lew, 6-3 and 8-6.

The longest singles and
pivotal point of the match was
at number one where the
Terrapins' Dave Bennett
defeated John Winter 6-4, 3-6
and 7-5. Winter had his man
5-0 in the third set but started
having trouble with his serve
and blew his cool. Bennett
chipped away at his lead
until he overcame it and led
6-5. Then Bennett won the set
with a hard return just to the
left of the right baseline and
the score 40 love.

In the doubles, Virginia's
Cooper and John Mertz were
the first to secure victory as
they dispatched with Speni and
Cohen 6-4, 6-1. Then Bennett
and Buch-Lew gained the game
and match point by breaking
service on Winter's double fault
to down Winter and Scheinman
6-4, 6-3. Though the outcome
of the last doubles match was
only academic the Cavaliers'
Podesta-Kain combination
struggled for an hour more
until the Terps' Patterson-Silverman
tandem prevailed
6-2, 11-9.

Virginia's netters rest from their
two day disaster until this weekend.
On Friday they travel to Carolina
for a match with N.C. State and
then remain there for a Saturday
match with Duke. Their next home
match is Monday with VMI at 2
p.m.
