5-0 Records On Line

Hopkins Stickmen Here

Moving into Mid-Eastern division
play, the Virginia lacrosse team
entertains three-time defending national
champion Johns Hopkins on
Saturday, April 18, at 10:30 a.m.

This last Saturday the Cavaliers
won a 21-3 match with the Alumni,
while Hopkins upset favored Mt.
Washington 11-10, the first time
Hopkins has beaten Mt. Washington
away since 1933. Mt. Washington
defeated Virginia in early season
going 11-5.

Hopkins will take the field this
Saturday the favorite by virtue of
their 5-0 record over strong opposition,
beating Yale 8-3, Brown 10-5,
Princeton 13-7, Washington College
16-10, and Mt. Washington 11-10,
and a 35-3 record over the last 3½
years.

6 Year Streak

Virginia hopes to dent a 6 year
losing streak to Hopkins and to
beat the Blue Jay in Charlottesville
for the first time since 1953. Coach
Glenn Thiel looks to his quick
attack — Jay Connor (5 goals, 5
assists), Tom Duquette (9 goals, 10
assists), and Rick Beach (12 goals)
and strong midfielders, Jim Potter
(5 goals, 3 assists), Charles Rullman
(6 goals, 2 assists), and Pete
Eldredge (7 goals, 2 assists) to
outscore a brilliant Hopkins' first
midfield and their potent attack.

Both teams have fine close
defenses. Virginia's Doug Hilbert,
making a strong bid for All-American
honors, has not been scored on
in the last three games. Hilbert shut
out 2 time little All-American
Harper Peterson of North Carolina
a week ago. Tom Dawes and Bruce
Mangels round out a close defense
which has allowed only 5 goals by
opponents close attackmen the last
3 games.

Alumni Slaughtered

Against the Alumni last Saturday,
soph Jay Connor and freshman
Tom Duquette led Virginia
with 6 points each. Hopkins middles
Doug Honig and Charlie Coker
led the Blue Jay win over Mt.
Washington. While Virginia's attack
is higher scoring than Hopkins is
Coach Thiel said, "Our midfields
are our experienced units and
should be an even test with the
Hopkins units."

National Title?

The game this Saturday will test
Virginia's ambitions for a national
title this year. Hopkins shows few
signs of letting the title slip from its
grip, but one of the finest Virginia
squads in years plans a strong run at
the Jays, especially after a 15-4
humiliation before a partisan
Homeward crowd at Hopkins last
year.

Faceoffs Key

Faceoffs may be a key to the
game Saturday, and Jim Potter and
Hopkins' Co-captain Doug Honig
are two of the best artists in the
country at the faceoff. Both will
square off as starters on Saturday.

The last time the Cavaliers
entertained Hopkins in Charlottesville,
the Blue Jays won 17-9, on
their way to a national title. Both
teams bring 5 game win streaks into
the game against college competition.
