Netters Meet Wake

By Ernest Dempsey

Virginia's varsity tennis
team faces a crucial challenge
this afternoon as the Wake
Forest Deacons invade the
Lady Astor courts with,
according to Coach Gordon
Burris, "one of the strongest
teams in the ACC."

Sporting an 8-0 record and
two Australian stars, the
Deacons pose a major threat to
Cavalier hopes of capturing this
year's ACC net crown.

Wake Forest's two Aussies
are first singles player Jim
Haslam and Gary Cooper, who
plays at the number three
position. The Deacon lineup
also includes several veterans
and a good group of freshman
players.

Last year, Virginia upset
Wake Forest by a 5-4 count in
a key match played at
Winston-Salem. Thus, the
Deacon netters will be out for
revenging this return match.

Tuesday afternoon, the
Cavaliers hosted a week
William and Mary team, and
scored an impressive 9-0
shutout over the Indians. The
match took less than two hours
and upped Virginia's record to
8-1, while lowering the visitors'
mark to 0-5. William and Mary
did not win a set.

At first singles, John Winter
trounced Indian Harry Cross
and Biff Cooper dropped Jim
Yates 6-3,6-0 at the number
two spot.

In other singles matches
Jeff Podesta and Bob Kain
defeated their opponents, Rod
Klima and Don Dewilde by
respective scores of 6-0, 6-0,
and 6-2, 6-1 while Hal Jones
gained a shutout over Indian
David Weaver and John Mertz's
premier singles performance
ended in a 6-1, 6-1 success.

In doubles competition,
Cooper and Mertz topped Yates
and Dewilde 6-2, 6-4, and
Winter and Andy Scheinman
defeated Cross and Kline 6-2,
6-3. At the third spot, Jones
and Doug Waterman ended the
afternoon with a shutout win
over Weaver and Hawks.
