Netters Shut Out
Bucknell Bisons

Despite having to pull three
individual matches out of the
fire, Virginia's tennis team shut
out defending Middle Atlantic
Conference champion, Bucknell,
by a score of 9-0 at
Keswick Club Tuesday afternoon.

At first singles, Cavalier
John Winter dropped the first
set but rallied to defeat
Wheeler Neff of Bucknell 3-6,
6-3, 7-5. Andy Schienman of
Virginia also lost his opening
set, but bounced back to
trounce Bison Steve Baird, 4-6,
7-5, 6-4 at the second spot.
The third Virginia come-from-behind
win occurred in the
number two doubles match as
John Mertz and Hal Jones
defeated the opposing team of
Baird and Alex Anderson, 2-6,
6-4, 6-2s

At third singles, Biff Cooper
defeated Anderson 6-4, 6-3,
and Jeff Podesta trounced
Bucknell's Mark Poses 6-4, 6-2,
at the fourth spot.

Cavalier Bob Kain downed
Jim Lackritz 6-2, 6-4, and
Doug Waterman rounded off
the singles sweep by blasting
Bison Dave Rath 6-1, 6-0.

Bucknell defaulted first
doubles, and 5n the number
two match, Podesta and Kain
blanked Lackritz and Larry
Kirshner 6-0, 6-0.

Virginia opens a series of
stiff away matches against
Pfeiffer College this afternoon,
and tangles with ACC opponents,
Clemson and South
Carolina, over the weekend.
The Cavaliers also face Presbyterian
and Furman later on in
the week.
