Stickmen Won Scrimmage But Must Face Powerful Denison University Here On March 28

Lacrosse Team Was Led By Tom Duquette, Rick Beach, Jim Potter And Dick Proutt Past Yalies

Hampered by the narrow,
rain-soaked Physics field and a
lack of consistent play, the
Cavalier lacrosse team barely
edged a rugged Yale squad,
11-9, in an overtime scrimmage
Wednesday. The Elis seemed to
have Virginia's number until
the final period when the home
team pulled the game out of
the fire with three goals in the
final period and two quick
scores in overtime.

Last year's Ivy League tri-champions
made their presence
felt quickly as they
jumped into the scoring
column three minutes into the
contest. Wing attackman Rauth
fed middle Sizzinoglia, who
beat junior goalie Al Hirsh with
a blazing drive. Jumping back
into contention, the Cavaliers
hit the nets on a rebound shot
by crease attackman Rich
Beach four minutes later. Just
before the end of the first
stanza, the Elis found themselves
two men up due to
penalties on Virginia. They
took advantage of this situation
to take the lead again as
Sizzinoglia threw in his second
tally.

Cavaliers Open Scoring

Virginia opened up the
scoring in the second period
with Beach again providing the
scoring punch on a pass from
Tom Duquette. Until the final
four minutes before the half,
neither team was able to get
another coordinated attack going
again. Then the visitors
erupted for three quick goals as
the Cavalier stickmen experiences
a defensive lapse. Middle reg>
Sizzinoglia and attackman
Rauth continued to lead
Yale's offensive corps, helping
the Blue to forge into a solid
5-3 halftime lead. Sandwiched
between these three scores was
Duquette's first tally on an
extra-man play engineered by
second-team All-American Jim
Potter.

The Elis increased their
advantage by hitting the nets
first in the second half. Cutting
from his midfield position,
Pettitt threw in a feed from
Rauth with the Cavaliers one
man short. Virginia narrowed
the count to 6-4, as Charlie
Rullman fired one past Yale's
All-Ivy goalie, Mike Stanton.
For the remainder of the
period the two teams traded
goals, neither squad managing
to maintain a consistent, balanced
game. Rauth and
Schmock provided the firepower
for the visitors, while
Beach and defenseman Doug
Hilbert equalled their efforts
for the Cavaliers. Hilbert's tally
came when the senior letterman
pulled in a pass in the
defensive zone and raced the
length of the field to beat the
Blue's amazed goaltender with
a sizzling line drive off the top
post.

In the fourth stanza
Virginia finally broke down the
Elis' defense and outscored the
stickmen from Connecticut 3-1.
Rullman started the scoring
one minute into the period by
throwing one in unassisted.
Hitting the scoreboard for the
final time, Yale upped their
goal total to nine on Rauth's
third tally.

Virginia Roars Back

With time running out, the
Cavaliers roared back. At 9:06
of the stanza, attackman Beach
hit the nets to finish the
afternoon with four goals.
Battling furiously to tie the,
game and to force it into
overtime, Virginia finally deadlocked
the contest at 9-9 when
middie Pete Eldredge blazed one
in with only 24 seconds remaining
on the clock.

Virginia quickly took control
of play in the overtime
stanza, preventing the Elis
from moving the ball out of
their defensive zone. One minute
into the period Bobby
Proutt scored what proved to
be the game-winner on a
rebound shot. Picking up his
second goal of the contest and
his sixth point 24 seconds
later, Duquette clinched the

victory for the Cavaliers. The
game was called by mutual
agreement moments later when
a Yale player was injured
attempting to stop a
point-blank shot.

Credit For Victory

Credit for the victory must
go to the offensive corps which
outshot the Blue, 65-32, and
scooped up almost twice as
many ground balls. Freshman
attackman Tom Duquette led
the Cavaliers with six points,
while Rick Beach fired in four
goals from the crease. Middies
Jim Potter and Dick Proutt
Win In Overtime Over Yale 11-9
helped to control midfield play
as they won 19 out of 27
faceoffs.

Virginia next faces Denison,
the defending Midwest Conference
lacrosse champion,
March 28.
