Scrimmage Yale Tomorrow
Stickmen Fall, 11-5
By Winston Wood
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Boasting one of their strongest
teams in recent years, the Mount
Washington Lacrosse Club whipped
Virginia 11-5, in their season
opener Saturday in Baltimore.
"A combination of age and
experience," was how Coach Glenn
Thiel described the Wolfpack after
the loss, played in frigid conditions
and a blustery Baltimore wind.
Starting at attack for the Mounties
were All-Americans Joe Cowan and
Phil Kniep, with runty little Jerry
Schnydman in the midfield and
Hank Kacstner on defense. All four
at one time or another led Johns
Hopkins to national championships.
Trailing 3-0 early in the first
quarter, the Cavalier stickmen
fought back to a 3-2 deficit at
halftime. Mr. Thiel was especially
praiseworthy of goalie Al Hirsh,
whose performance during the first
half kept Virginia in the game until
late in the third period. With a total
of 19 saves in the game, the
third-year man made 11 in the first
half, six of those in the initial
quarter.
After a quick burst of Wolfpack
scores in the opening minutes of
the second half, Virginia
co-captains Charlie Rullman and
Jim Potter each tallied to pull the
score to 6-5. Leading the attack was
Rick Beach with two goals and
Tom Duquette with three assists.
The Wolfpack then exploded with
five goals to put the game away.
The contest was marked by a
large number of penalties in the
first half. In fact, Virginia's first
three goals came on extra-man
situations with the Cavaliers having
a one man advantage.
Mount Washington dominated
the game in both shooting and with
ground ball control. The Wolfpack
grabbed up 60 loose balls to,
Virginia's 53, and shot 42 times
compared to the Cavaliers' 38.
Scoring on 72 per cent of the shots
on goal, Mount Washington kept a
lot of pressure on the Virginia goal,
which kept its head well until the
defense fell apart late in the game.
Virginia scored on 55 per cent of
the shots on goal.
As to be expected, Cowan had
the hottest hand of the day, scoring
three times. Though hardly running
circles around an untried Cavalier
defense, he played well enough to
score at crucial periods in the game
when a Virginia goal might have
sparked more of a comeback.
Yale will roll into town tonight
to scrimmage tomorrow at 3:30.
Losing last weekend to the Long
Island Lacrosse Club 9-4, the Elis
are in much the same state as
Virginia, as they also have a young
coach in his first year of major
college competition. Coaching last
year at Lebanon Valley College in
Pennsylvania, Bob Mc
replaced veteran Dick Corrigan this
summer when Corrigan left to take
a position as Assistant Athletic
Director at Pennsylvania.
