Lose To U N C, State

Hatten Leads Fencers Over VMI

Last weekend the University of
Virginia Fencing Club hosted a
quadrangle match with UNC, N.C.
State, and VMI. The season's final
saw the Cavaliers drop two of the
three. For its 1969-70 season the
team compiled a conference record
of 2-4 and overall 4-6.

On Friday night the Cavaliers
defeated the VMI Keydets 15-12.
The sabre team carried the evening
with an excellent 7-2 mark. Evan
Robinson had a perfect evening
with three wins. Jack Kille contributed
two; first-year man Gerry
Timberlake and Joe Stegmaier had
one win each.

Captain Steve Hatten continued
his winning ways by taking three in
foil for a perfect night. Epeeist Bill
Adams took two, and single wins
were supplied by Jack Cofer, Dave
Seroskie, and Brian Coupe.

The fencers did not fare so well
against the Carolina schools, N.C.
State, and UNC are ranked one and
two respectively in the conference.
Against UNC Virginia was able to
mount eight victories, and against
State only five. Individually, Steve
Hatten suffered his first defeat of
the season against UNC but won his
remaining five bouts. Bill Adams
also had a good day with four wins.
Roy Ritzmann had the only sabre
win against State by beating their
number one sabreist, who leads the
conference with a record of 29-1,
by a score of 5-1. However, the
victory was disallowed by a qualifications
dispute. Robinson had two
victories against UNC, Seroskie and
Coupe one each.

Captain Steve Hatten led the
conference in foil with an excellent
29-1 record and will occupy the
first position on the conference foil
team. Next weekend the top two
fencers in each weapon travel to
Raleigh for the conference championships.
Those who finish first
there will travel next summer to the
Martini Rossi Tournament in Turin,
Italy.
