Turques Down W&L

Ruggers Tie Baltimore

Rallying in the closing minutes,
the Virginia Rugby A team tied
Baltimore, 11-11, Saturday on
Nameless Field. The Turques (B)
and C teams both won their
matches as well.

Mounting a balanced attack in
the first half, Baltimore opened up
an 8-0 halftime lead. Early in the
period Ken Taylor, their speedy fly
half, booted a 20 yard drop kick.
Several other possible scores were
averted as Mike Richwine, Virginia
fullback, turned several runs into
the middle when they were bottled
up.

Late in the first half Greg
Gregory scored on a short power
run from a loose ruck. Ken Taylor's
conversion gave Baltimore a hefty
8-0 lead at halftime.

Virginia had trouble
coordinating back and serum play
in the first half. Several times they
threatened, but scores would just
not come against an experienced
Baltimore side, the finest club in
the east last fall.

Early in the second half Jim
Hawkes gained a try for Virginia as
he fell on a loose Baltimore kick in
the try zone. Tom Furniss failed on
the conversion attempt.

Basil Tydings upped the visitors'
lead to 11-3 midway through the
half as he scored a short try on a
dummy fake.

Virginia did not want to lose
before the Nameless Field crowd so
they started to pull together late in
the match. With about three
minutes left in the match Sam
Robinson tried off of a series of
passes down the left side. The
conversion failed.

In the closing minutes Courtney
Hoopes dove in for a try off of a
loose penalty kick. He bulled into
the try zone with half the
Baltimore team pushing, pulling,
and tackling him. Tom Furniss
added the all important conversion
under pressure to tie things up.

The Turques (B) improved on
their undefeated (9-0-1) fall season
with an impressive 26-0 win over
W&L 'A.' Captained by little Will
O'Keefe, the squad put on an
explosive exhibition taking a 14-0
lead into halftime.

John Barbieri led the attack
from the serum by scoring twice.
Seven other players added points to
the tally.

Ball control and hustle sum up
the Trails ('C' gold) fine showing
against Baltimore B, as they sent
the opposition back to Maryland
licking their wounds after a 26-0
whipping.

Dickie Jordan and Ronnie
Pulliam led the attack. Pete
Schmidt, in his first game, played
extremely well and scored a try.

The 'C' blue squad knocked off
the James River Club of Richmond,
15-6. Many new players took the
pitch for the first time in this
match.

Next Saturday Washington
invades to tangle with the 'A' and
'B' sides. Washington was the only
club to beat Virginia in the fall
season.
