Thinclads Race Past VMI
By Mike DeCamps
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Cavalier thinclads parlayed a
strong performance in the middle
distance events with a surprising
amount of depth to race past VMI
Tuesday night, 73-58 in the final
dual meet of the indoor season for
both squads.
The meet, which had been
forecasted even closer by Virginia
coaches Lou Onesty and Jim
Holdren, left the Cavalier team with
a promising outlook for the outdoor
season this spring and saw the
equalling of two indoor school
records.
Dick Morris tied the school
record in the 600 yard dash with a
fine 1'13.8 clocking, and Brew
Barron tied his own school indoor
record in the 880 moving out on
the last tap to win in 1:58.8.
Another outstanding performance
in the running events was turned in
by Greg Lane, who coasted to a
4:23 mile after passing the halfway
mark in 2:07.
The Cavaliers also got a 1-2
performance in the two mile from
Rick Katz and Phil Meyer, who had
both run sub 4:30 miles forty
minutes earlier to finish behind
Lane. Meyer cased past Katz in the
two mile to win in 9:57.8, after
Katz had beaten him in the mile
with 4:26.
Johnny Morris led Virginia's
performance in the shorter running
events with first places in the 60
and 440 yard dashes. Morris led the
whole way in the 440 win in 51.6
and took the 60 in 6.6.
In the field events, Al Sinesky
continued a fine indoor season
winning the shot put at 52′9\m=1/4\″,
and Jim Shannon led the Cavaliers
in the broad jump, taking a first
place with 22′10″ leap. In the high
jump, the thinclads got a first from
Bill Davis, alias tight end for the
football team, at 5′10″.
The final event of the night, the
mile relay, was taken by the
Cavalier quartet of Johnny and
Dick Morris, Julian Solotorovsky,
and Roger Calvert in 3.27.4.
Saturday the Virginia squad will
compete in the Atlantic Coast
Conference Meet, the annual fun
fair for Maryland's powerful track
team. Virginia should stand good
chances in the 600, 1000, and shot
behind Sinesky, Johnny Morris, and
Lane.
