Await ACC Meet

Mermen Dunk Tech, 70-34

By Ernest Dempsey

"The Juniors and Seniors say
they have never been so anxious for
this meet before. All I can say is
that Wake Forest had better be
ready."

Coach Ron Good's enthusiastic
words reflect the attitude of the
Virginia swimming team, which
awaits next week's Atlantic Coast
Conference swim meet at the
University of North Carolina.

The Cavalier tankers certainly
displayed a winning spirit by
defeating Virginia Tech, 70-34, in
their last dual meet of the season at
Blacksburg Tuesday afternoon.

As in last Thursday's VMI meet,
Coach Good was faced with a
limited amount of swimmers. However,
the team's healthy members
displayed their versatility by capturing
both relays and finishing 1-2
in four swimming events as well as
the diving.

Virginia's 400-yard medley relay
team of Don Farmer, Brian Fuller,
Gerry Rollins, and Jack Martin was
one second off the Cavalier and
Virginia Tech pool record of
3:52.2.

The swimming team ended its
dual meet competition with a 7-3-1
record.

All eyes are now focused on the
ACC meet where Coach Good and
his swimmers hope to avenge early
season losses to Wake Forest and
Maryland. Last year, Virginia
finished fifth in the meet.

According to Coach Good, the
Cavaliers began preparing for the
ACC competition immediately after
the Tech meet. The Mermen appear
to be in great shape, with spirits to
match.
