First ACC Win
Cagers Bump Turtles, 71-69
By Davis Marshall
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Lefty Driesell brought his
high flying Terrapins, conquerors
of Duke, Wake Forest and
NIT hopeful Georgetown, to
C'ville last night to do battle
with Virginia's hapless
Cavaliers. Will Hetzel, the Turtles'
mod trust of Hippiedom,
was supposed to lead his team
to a smashing, reputation enhancing
triumph but apparently
he failed to read the
papers as Chip Case & Company
upset the Terps 71-69

Chip Case Goes Up For Two Despite Efforts Of Terp
Case Led Second Half Rally, Finished With 21 Points
Case, completely out-shining
Hetzel the Edsel, tallied 21 points
while big Bill Gerry, hampered by a
cumbersome nose-guard, hauled in
20 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers to
their first ACC win in 15 outings
and fourth straight over the Terps.
Tim Rash, Kevin Kennelly, Chip
Miller also aided the cause as the
trio contributed 26 points and nine
assists between them.
Maryland jumped out to a quick
10-4 lead after breaking a 4-4 tie,
with two outside jump shots by 6-6
Rod Horst contributing. Gerry cut
the margin to three points but then
the first of many spurts of simply
atrocious shooting underneath by
the Cavaliers allowed the Turtles to
build a nine point lead. With the
Terps' outside shooting bombing
the net off the basket Maryland
gradually increased the margin to
twelve, 32-20.
But then two foul shots by
Rash, a Kennelly jumper and a
lay-in by Case on a feed from Rash
and Kennelly sliced the deficit to
eight and the crowd and team came
back to life. Egged on by the
frantic antics of referee Lou Bello
and the little Pep Band, pepping
with all its might, the friendly
4,000 frenzied spectators used its
"crowd power" to ruffle the Terps'
attack. A Maryland time-out could
not stem the Cavaliers' momentum
as Case, Scott McCandlish and Rash
brought Virginia within three,
37-34, by the half-time buzzer.
Following the second half tip-off
Driesell's Terps quickly bounced
out to a five point lead. But the
Cavaliers stubbornly refused to
break as they kept within two to
six points until, with 11:13 left,
Chip Miller connected on a 22 foot
jumper to tie the game at 50-50.
"Crowd power" took its toll on the
Terps as Virginia battled to a four
point lead until, with McCandlish
playing despite four fouls, Mickey
Wiles connected on two free throws
to knot the score at 61 all with four
minutes remaining.
Rod Horst gave Maryland its
final lead at 65-63 but lay-ins by
Case and Gerry quickly remedied
the situation as Virginia forged to a
69-65 lead, despite losing
McCandlish on his fifth foul. Wiles
hit on a 12 foot jumper with two
minutes to go but a series of
turnovers prevented either team to
score until, with 11 seconds more,
Tim Rash put the game out of the
Terps' reach by canning two more
foul shots.
