Driesell's Terps Invade U Hall
By Steve Giannini
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Virginia will still be looking
for its first ACC win when
Maryland visits University Hall
tonight.
Lefty Driesell's somewhat
surprising Maryland team will
be looking for its fourth
conference win, having beaten
Clemson, Wake Forest and
Duke. After what was supposed
to be a mediocre year at
best, the Terps have a winning
overall record of 11-8.
The big man for Maryland
so far this year has been
guard-forward. Will Hetzel
averaging around 17 points a
game and eight rebounds.
Mickey Wiles and Charlie Bland
usually start at the guard
positions while Rod Horst and
Sparky Still play up front.
Wiles is the smallest player
who has developed good floor
play as a ball handler and assist
man. The other four players
have good size and are tough
on the boards. Still, a sophomore,
has been implementable in
Maryland's success.
Horst is currently the second
leading scorer for the
Terps and the leading rebounder.
Coach Driesell does not like
to go to his bench, but he does
put in Steve Kebeck once in a while
to replace Wiles as floor leader. All
five of the Maryland starters are
averaging in double figures.
The Terps go with a tenacious
man for man defense, but when
faced with the same tactics by
opponents, they get themselves into
trouble.
Virginia will probably go with
the same game control plan the
type that has slowed Maryland
down considerably in past games.
Coach Gibson's corps are healthy.
Bill Gerry's broken nose should not
hamper him too much, and he will
play.
Currently Gerry leads the Cavaliers
in scoring with a 16.3 average
and rebounding with a 10.6 average.
It is possible second-year guard
Chip Miller will see some action.
Miller played about twenty minutes
in the UNC game a week ago, but
did not see any action against N.C.
State.
Captain Chip Case has been
scoring at a 15.9 per game clip,
second best on the Cavalier squad.
Against the Wolfpack Case had his
second highest game total of the
season. 26, and pulled a career high
of 16 rebounds.
The lithe Scott McCandlish has
come on during the year to average
13.2 points a game, hitting from
outside and inside, and pulling
down an average of 9.6 rebounds a
game to compliment Gerry.
Virginia's two guards have not
been doing too much shooting
Rash averages 7.7 a game and
Kevin Kennelly, 5.3. Kennelly can
however, claim the honors in foul
shots, hitting 46 of 56 for a mark.
Frank Dewitt and John Hill will
be ready to come off the bench if
called upon. Dewitt substitutes up
front and Hill is an additional ball
handling guard.
Coach Gibson has been satisfied
by his team's effort and thinks it is
time to "put it all together" for
Virginia's first conference win and a
strong finish in the remaining five
home games.
On the other hand, the volatile
Lefty Driesell is intent on leading
Maryland to a winning record to
prove it can be done and to put his
squad in a good position for the
ACC Tournament in March.
