Winless In ACC
Carolina Defeats Cagers, 87-72
Tripping down to Chapel
Hill for an ACC win proved
fruitless for the Cavalier cagers
last night, as the Virginians fell
to the ninth ranked Tar Heels,
87-72.
Charlie Scott led the way
for Carolina down the stretch
in the second half, ending the
game with 30 points. Bill Gerry
countered for Virginia with 28
points, 21 of which were
accumulated in the last 20
minutes.
Although North Carolina
did wind up the victor by 15
points, the scrapping Cavaliers
gave the Tar Heels and their
vociferous fans many moments
of anxiety. With under nine
minutes left on the clock the
Virginians had closed the gap
to within three, at 59-56, from
a 59-51 deficit.
The Tar Heels deployed a
full court press, forced the
Cavaliers into costly possession
turnovers, and bulged back to a
nine point spread, 65-56 with
5:37 remaining. Virginia never
quit and picked her way back
to within striking distance,
pulling up five short at 67-62
on two field goals by Bill
Gerry.
But the Carolina press and
Carolina bench took effect in
the last four minutes, and the
Cavaliers found themselves out
of time and finesse. The Tar
Heels unleashed their four
corner stall with about two
minutes to go, ahead by nine,
75-66, and coasted to the
finish, 87-72.
The Cavaliers shot a poor
33 percent from the floor in
the first half and donated the
basketball away on 16 lost
possessions to help Carolina
establish a 32-25 half time
lead. The score was tied at 10
and again at 14 before the Tar
Heels slid out ahead to stay.
Previous to the varsity
game, the Baby Heels edged
the Cavayearlings 86-75 to put
the Virginia first-year men's
season record at 3-4. Jim
Hobgood tallied 27 points to
the Cavalier effort, as Barry
Parkhill contributed 23 points.
Bill Gibson's eagers return
to University Hall against
nationally ranked North
Carolina State Saturday
afternoon in a game that is to
be regionally televised.
Though presently 0-9 in the
conference (6-11 overall), the
Cavaliers could argue a strong
case that they deserve better.
