In Memorial Gym

Swimmers Face W&L Saturday

If no ice materializes on the
placid surface of the Memorial Gym
pool before tomorrow afternoon,
the Virginia Mermen will host
Washington and Lee in hopes of
upping their 2-4 count a notch.

The Generals from Lexington bring much experience and talent
with them as they seek to remove
the Cavaliers as a threatening
obstacle to a possible state swimming
championship.

Top billing for the meet goes to
W&L's sprinter Bill Brumback.
Brumback, in addition to having
proved to be the margin of victory
in last year's 53-51 decision between
the two schools, is an
All-American swimmer who hopes
represent the United States in the
1972 Olympics.

Despite W&L's apparent superiority,
Coach Ron Good is confident
of a Virginia win. "On paper
I think we can beat them," Mr.
Good speculated.

Coach Good maintains that the
first four events of the meet are of
crucial importance. Both teams will
be out for the seven points going to
the winners of the medley relay.
There is a real battle in the 1,000
yard marathon between Virginia's
Gary Chewning and W&L's Florida
import, John Lawler.

The 200 yard freestyle pits the
General's co-captain Roger Martin
against any of several aspiring
Cavaliers. From the 50 yard sprint
on, the Virginia Mermen must rely
on superior depth to offset Lexington's
balanced attack.

The Cavaliers are in Memorial
Gym against Friday afternoon to
face the Clemson Tigers, the ACC's
only other non-swimming scholarship
team. Sunday the Mermen host
the Northern Virginia Aquatic
Club, an organization that has
amongst its numbers some of the
best high school swimmers in the
East, at least six of whom are
interested in attending the University
next year.
