85-73 In Opener

Yearlings Down Rats

Jim farmer sank a free throw
with some 16 minutes left in the
game and put the Cavayearlings
ahead to stay, 45-44, as Coach Dick
DiBaso's first-year men ran past
the VMI Rats, 85-73, for their
opening game win Wednesday
night.

A tight man to man defense
from the crew cuts in the first half
had provided them with a 41-36
half time lead, but the Cavaliers
opened with an aggressive zone press
in the last period to spark the come
from behind rally.

The Cavayearlings took their
45-44 dg and pulled way ahead,
59-44, with 13 minutes to go.

Jim Farmer finished as high man
for Virginia with 24 points, while
Jim Hobgood's left-handed jumper
from the corners netted him 22
points. Barry Parkhill, who spent
much of the game in foul trouble,
scored 16 points before picking up
his fifth personal with 5:06 left on
