Scott McCandlish Scores As Cavaliers Romp Past VMI, 65-44

Not to be dismayed by a dismal first 13 minutes, the
Cavaliers hustled their way through the VMI Keydets in the
second half to post their first victory of the 1969-70 season,
65-44.

The beginnings had the look of total disaster. The eagers,
not able to consume the training meal until 5 pm due to an
unscheduled bus trip from Washington, were flatter than flat,
falling behind 21-8.

But with just 5:16 left before intermission, Frank DeWitt
and Scott McCandlish began to take up the slack, and pulled
the Cavaliers to within seven, 14-22 with just two minutes left.
A quick four points by Chip Case plus a Tim Rash jumper cut
the crew cut lead to two 22-20, and a crowd of some 2,200
who were initially hostile to the home team began to warm up
to the prospect of a Virginia victory.

It took the Cavaliers a grand total of five minutes into the
second half to bucket their first field goal, but once Frank
DeWitt scored Virginia's 25th point to put his team ahead
25-24, there was no stopping the Cavaliers.
