Quakers Upend Cavaliers, 84-53

PHILADELPHIA Looking
ahead to their game with
Princeton, the University of
Pennsylvania's basketball team
spotted Bill Gibson's Cavaliers
an eight-point lead in the first
ten minutes of play but
crushed the Cavaliers in the
second half, ending the game
with an 84-53 win to maintain
the Quakers' unbeaten status.

Virginia took the lead only
at the outset of the game,
before Pennsylvania set out to
prove they are the best the Ivy
League has to offer this season.
Pennsylvania poured it on early
in the second half to break the
back of the aggressive Virginia
offense, which had proved so
mettlesome to the Quakers in
the early going.

Surprisingly enough
Virginia did not come out with
the patterned offense that was
seen against Georgia Tech and
Duke. At the beginning of the
game the Cavaliers came out
running and were able to take
an early lead.

Virginia was not to lose her
slim advantage until the final
five minutes of the first half
when Corky Calhoun netted
the Quakers two crucial
baskets. Coach Gibson then
decided to slow down the
Cavalier attack and wait for the
good shot; but Penn held the
hotter hand as the Quakers'
Bilsky blasted away from the
corners.

A tight Pennsylvania
defense forced the Cavaliers
into 13 first half lost
possessions (as opposed to three
Quaker turnovers), and the
Virginians found themselves
trailing 38-24 at intermission.

The Cavaliers fired a 75
field goal percentage in the
second period, but were unable
to take advantage of the few
Penn mistakes while a lack of
strength under the boards
afforded few scoring
opportunities.

Pennsylvania shot
consistently from the floor all
evening long - 53 per cent in
the first half and 51 per cent in
the second period. Bill Gerry
led the Cavalier scoring effort
with 20 points.

Bill Gibson's scrappy cagers
dropped their third contest on
the season, 84-53, but provided
the Quakers with a little more
than expected especially in the
first half. The Cavaliers return
to University Hall this evening
for their home against
the Keydets of VMI.
