5-0, Maryland Ruins Title Hopes

Defending collegiate
champions Maryland blanked
Virginia 5-0 yesterday in the
first round of the NCAA
Southern Regional soccer
tournament.

Scoring one goal in the
second period and exploding in
a flurry of four in the fourth,
the Maryland team outshot the
reigning ACC champs 24-4, in a
rematch of a 2-2 tie earlier in
the season. Cavalier goalie Dan,
Abramson was credited with
twelve saves and the Terrapin
goal tender with three.

The winners will play
Southern Florida in College
Park in the second round some
time this weekend. The Florida
team, undefeated in eleven
starts, shut out Navy Saturday,
1-0.

Playing under NCAA
tournament rules, Virginia was
able to stick with the Terps for
three quarters until falling
before a succession of quick
goals in the final period. Used
to playing with what would be
considered two platoons, the
Cavaliers seemingly ran out of
gas late in the third quarter.
The NCAA allows only five
substitutions per game in
tournament play, but usually
only four are made, saving one
in case the goalie is hurt.
Unable to substitute as freely
as they had during the regular
season, Virginia could not
carry off a win.

It was the seventh shutout
of the year for Maryland, a
new season record for the
team. This bettered the mark
set by the '56 team and
equalled '67. Their record now
stands at 9-1-2.

Maryland's first goal came
with 9:16 gone in the second
quarter, as Rasim Tugberk
scored easily on a penalty kick
for pushing in the goal area.
Tugberk scored again in the
fourth period to give him a

season total of 17 goals. Pete
Milhado, Bill McKay, and Nick
Skerka each scored in the
winning effort.

Virginia, now 9-1-1 for the
season, must get ready for the
state championships to be
played in Roanoke tomorrow.
Their opponent will be
Roanoke College, a perennial
soccer power in state
competition.
