Plagued By Mistakes, Cavaliers Shuffle Off To College Park This Week For Season Finale

Ending their season, Virginia's
Cavayearlings came up with a 7-0
win over William & Mary's freshmen
Saturday in Williamsburg.

Dave Bratt was the workhorse
for the Cavayearlings as he carried
the 41 times for 177 yards and
the only touchdown of the game.

William & Mary's freshmen could
never get going offensively. Virginia's
defensive unit intercepted
four passes, recovered two fumbles
and blocked a punt. In the second
half, the Tribe could only manage
one first down. That came after
their quarterback, Ivan Stovall,
took the ball on a sneak all the way
for a touchdown, but the play was
called back for clipping. However,
after the mark off had been made,
it was still good for a first down.

The Cavayearlings dominated
play otherwise. They were stopped
within their 10 yard line by
mistakes, penalties, and stubborn
Indian defensive play.

As play opened it was apparent
that Virginia could move the ball
on the ground. But mistakes entered
the picture. The Cavayearlings
lost the ball on a fumble the first
time they had possession. The next
time they had it quarterback Bill
Troup was intercepted.

William & Mary mounted a
threat only to be spoiled by an
interception by Virginia's defensive
end Bill Williams.

There were more turnovers from
errors but finally the Cavayearlings
were able to move the ball into
Indian territory. There the attack
bogged down and a field goal
attempt by Kevin Michaels was off
the mark.

The only score of the game
resulted in a blocked Indian punt.
Guard John MacConnell blocked it
and Michaels pounced on it. It took
five plays before Bratt powered
over for the score. Michaels' conversion
was good.

The second half was marked by
Cavalier control and mistakes. Time
and again deep in Indian territory
the goal line the Cavayearlings.
Penalties hurt the most.
A Bratt run for a touchdown was
nullified by a clipping infraction,
and a Michaels' field goal attempt
failed.

Virginia's Cavayearlings ended
their season with a 2-2-1 mark.
