In NCAA Tournament Play

Booters To Face Maryland

Monday afternoon the ACC Champion Cavalier soccer team
will realize their season's aspirations when they face Maryland in
the NCAA Southern Regionals.

Last Monday North Carolina beat the Terrapins, 3-2, in Chapel
Hill thus giving the championship to Virginia
who had tied Maryland and beaten the Tar
Heels.

The four teams from the general southern
area playing in this tournament are Navy,
Maryland, Virginia, and the University of South
Florida. Navy will face the undefeated Florida
team.

Tournament rules require a team to use only
16 players. Coach Gordon Burris has been using
two platoons all season so this will be a
disadvantage to Virginia. Another mark against
the Cavaliers is the fact that they have not
played in two weeks. This could take some of
the sharpness out of the play for a while.

Coach Burris thinks his defense will have to
hold the Terps down until the offense gets
rolling.

Maryland still presents an impressive lineup,
studded with some international stars. Leading
the Terps' attack will be center forward Rocco
Morelli. Morelli scored five goals in five
attempts last year in the NCAA championship
game.

Cavalier Booter Moves To Kick Ball Downfield

Defensively the Terps will probably start Tarik Ayasun from
Istanbul at goalie. Les Bernard from the Bronx will handle the
left fullback slot and Paul Stichl will be on the other side.

Maryland has had its most disappointing season in recent
years. They were co-national champions
last year and were looking to
be the sole owners of that title this
year, but three games have
darkened their prospects. They led
Navy and Virginia and lost the only
game they have ever lost in the
ACC to UNC, 3-2.

Virginia will travel to College
Park with hopes of spoiling Maryland's
season even further on
Monday. Then Wednesday the
Cavaliers go to Roanoke to face a
tough Roanoke College for the
state championship.
