B,C Squads Remain Unbeaten

Ruggers Sweep Games With UNC

By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Adjusting to the muddy pitch,
the Virginia Rugby A squad rallied
for a 11-3 decision over the
Carolina side Sunday afternoon at
Nameless Field.

North Carolina opened the
match with determination. Realizing
that Virginia was not accustomed
to a wet field, the
Tarheels controlled early play.

Dave Shriner scored the first
points of the day as he ran 55 yards
with a loose ball to give Carolina a
3-0 lead.

Virginia was unable to coordinate
scrum play in the first half.
The backfield was slowed greatly
by the extremely deplorable playing
conditions.

The Tar Heels were able to halt
several Cavalier rallies, and the half
ended with the Carolinians on top
3-0.

As the weather improved so did
the play of Virginia. Early in the
second half Dick Cross burst into
the try zone from close out. He
carried several tacklers with him
across the try line in one of his
better moves of the season.

After ten minutes of back and
forth play, Virginia gained the
momentum for a while. Working
the ball out to scrummer Wick
Williams, on a 5 yard scrum,
Virginia went ahead as he plowed in
for three. Paul Bishop, booting for
the injured Tom Furniss, converted.

In the closing minutes of the
match the Tar Heels tried to rally,
but the partisan Cavalier fans would
not let their heroes lose as they
came through with raucous support.

With time running out, Virginia
gained control of the ball. Swiftly
moving down the pitch, Terry
Daniel got the ball and bulled over
the line for a try.

Liking the word undefeated, the
Turques overwhelmed the W&L A
squad, 20-3, to up their mark to
6-0-1.

Not wasting much time, David
Kratovil scored an early try to give
the Turques a lead they would not
relinquish. Moments later Craig
Grabeel, not wanting to be bested
by Kratovil, lugged the ball in for a
try.

Sunday Features Rough & Ready Action On Nameless Field

Virginia Ruggers Swept Past Tar Heels, 'A' Team Winning 11-3

Midway through the half Downing
Smith scored three on a 15 yard
power sweep to up Virginia's lead,
9-0.

W & L started to click about this
time. After controlling play for
several minutes, they finally
realized a try for their efforts.

Allie Duckworth closed out the
first half scoring with a beautifully
executed 35-yard drop kick. Virginia
led 12-0 at halftime.

But the Turques were not
content with their first half success,
as they came roaring back with two
scores in the second half.

The C squad rallied late in their
match to tie Carolina's B team,
11-11.

Next Sunday the Georgetown
Rugby Club invades Nameless Field.
