Fred McGlynn Boots Ball In 2-0 Cavalier Win Over Virginia Tech Yesterday Afternoon
Victory Gave Virginia First Unbeaten Record Ever As Team Wound Up Season 9-0-1 Overall
Steady defensive play and a
pressing offense outclassed the
Hokies of Virginia Tech, 2-0,
and gave the Virginia soccer
team an undefeated season.
Settling themselves after a
scoreless first period, the Cavalier
booters got on the board
off the foot of Steve Kennelly
with 4:47 gone in the second
quarter. The score came on an
indirect kick from Jay Conner;
John Taylor centered it, with
Kennelly directing it past the
Gobbler goalie.
Some 400 soccer enthusiasts
turned out to see the Cavaliers start
slowly before rallying and controlling
the play. A scoreless third
period left the Virginia booters
with a slim one-goal advantage.
With some 15 minutes left in the
game Fred McGlynn teamed with
Jay Conner to ice the contest with
a second goal. Conner crossed the
ball toward the center, where
McGlynn's head intercepted it and
knocked it into the net.
From there Tech managed to
threaten several times, but the
action was all Virginia's as the
booters remain undefeated, 9-0-1,
and await an invitation to the State
Tournament November 15. The
Cavaliers would face a tough
Roanoke squad in that tourney.
Coach Burris, obviously a happy
man, was greatly relieved when the
clock ended the match. Commenting
that the Cavaliers had difficulty
in coming back after the magnificent
effort against Maryland Tuesday,
Mr. Burris added, "We an out
of steam."
But Tech might not agree with
such an analysis. Virginia pressed
the Hokie half of the field from
start to end, and it seemed only a
matter of time before the VPI
defense would give way to such
pressure. Danny Abramson was not
totally inactive in the Virginia goal,
but his defense did allow him to
enjoy most of the game. That
defense has shut out six opponents
in ten outings.

Lewis and Faulconer deserve much
credit for the soccermen's success.
Although both men could point to
more preparation on defense and
technique, more self-confidence
among the squad themselves as
winners, Mr. Lewis aptly took the
emphasis of success from the
coaching staff and to the players.
"They're the people who do the
work," he concluded.
By virtue of today's shutout of
Tech, Virginia puts herself directly
under the eagle eyes of the NCAA
Tournament Committee. A 9-0-1
season, including an impressive the
at College Park, make the Cavaliers
very eligible for an invitation to the
NCAA soccer championships.
Coach Burris does not expect the
committee to make any decision
concerning Virginia for at least two
weeks; and it may take two weeks
for Charlottesville to realize just
what the soccer team has accomplished.
