Virginia's Horsemen Met Tough Competition From Penn, Came Up With 2-2 Tie

Down 2-0, the University of
Pennsylvania's polo team came
back to tie Col. Harry Wilson's
Virginia squad 2-2 at Brookhill
Farm Sunday afternoon. Before a
piddling crowd of some thirty true
aficionados the Cavalier malletmen
held the usually strong Pennsylvanians
scoreless for three chukkars,
before yielding to two quick
goals by Willie McCormick.

McCormick is rated at two goals,
and captained the Virginia team last
year as an undergraduate. Teaming
up with Doug Antzack another two
goal player, he gave the Cavaliers
their best competition to date. The
match will not count in the
intercollegiate standings, however, as both McCormick and Antzack
are graduate students in the Penn
Veterinary School.

Playing with Darrell Banks at
number one, Rob Rinchart at
number two, and "Gentleman"
John Cutler at three. Virginia drew
first blood, as Cutler blasted one in
late in the, first chukkar. Weaker
than in the past, Penn was unable
to climb on to the score board in
the first half. The Cavaliers, on the
other hand, played fine polo,
keeping the ball on the Penn side of
the field, peppering their goal with
shots most of the afternoon.

In the third chukkar Virginia
scored again, on a pony goal off
Tom Martin's horse. The game
see-sawed for most of the third
period, with neither team being
able to mount much of a scoring
threat.

Finally Penn scored early in the
fourth period to change the completion
of the game drastically.
Instead of the shutout, the Cavaliers
would have to settle for a tie.

John Stewart, a second-year
man from Boyce, Virginia, also saw
some action with Martin in the
third chukkar.

The next intercollegiate match
for the Cavaliers is this Sunday at
Brookhill vs. Yale, last years collegiate
champs.
